Instructional Designer Recruitment

If you are looking to recruit an instructional designer but are not sure what they can do or are interested in becoming an instructional designer, the summary below will give you a good idea of what you can expect.

An Instructional Designer is essentially a learning guru that investigates the needs of the audience and then designs, develops and implements tools to achieve the learning objectives before evaluating the success of the outcome.
Instructional designers will generally use a structured methodology to facilitate achievement of the learning objectives. The most common model used for creating instructional materials is probably the ADDIE model which stands for:

  • Analyse - analyse learner characteristics, tasks to be learned, work with Subject Matter Experts etc.
  • Design - develop learning objectives and choose an instructional approach
  • Develop - write content and create instructional or training materials such as visual aids or multimedia solutions such as eLearning (e-Learning)
  • Implement - deliver or distribute the instructional materials
  • Evaluate - make sure the materials achieved the desired goals

Instructional designers can use a wide range of tools to present their information but one of the fastest growing areas is that of e-Learning (eLearning) and particularly Rapid e-Learning which can be a very cost effective way of presenting training materials to a large number of delegates situated in a number of locations without having to bring them to the classroom. In conjunction with a Learning Management System (LMS) it also enables you to monitor the take up rate and results/pass rates (where a quiz is involed).

Rapid e-Learning can be facilitated in a very simple format such as through PowerPoint presentations but for more complex (hopefully more effective) solutions there are a rapidly increasing number of offerings available. To list just a few:

  • Adobe Captivate (particularly good where screen capture processes are fundamental to the learning requirement)
  • Adobe Articulate
  • Articulate Presenter
